Da Tian Mei Ren

In our never-ending effort to bring the eastern tea tradition into your cup, we often stumble upon unexpected, yet most welcome, surprises. Such is the case with this Da Tian Mei Ren.

Inspired by its well-known sibling, the Taiwanese Dong Fang Mei Ren, this Fujian-grown tea holds all the qualities to rival it in both beauty and flavor. Its wonderful, multicolored leaves yield a highly aromatic liquor, revealing contrasting nuances: the comforting warmth of malty, steamed biscuits on one side, and the fresh, slightly bitter brightness of bergamot on the other: two notes that seem to dance in graceful opposition upon the palate.

This lively tension resolves into a long, harmonious finish of sweet acacia honey, the signature note of Mei Ren teas. A tea that, with its bold character, steps out from the shadow of the classic Oriental Beauty, and is well on its way to winning its own beauty contest.

Da Tian Mei Ren traces its origins back to 1886, when a Hakka tea master in Fujian’s Datian County began cultivating a unique style of oolong inspired by Taiwanese tea cultivars. Nestled on the misty, high-altitude slopes of the Daiyun Mountains, Datian offers fertile soil, balanced sunlight, and pristine conditions ideal for growing premium tea.

The production is meticulous: tender shoots are handpicked and carefully processed through withering, shaking, oxidation, fermentation, and drying, with the leafhopper’s natural activity enhancing the tea’s signature honeyed and fruity aroma. Known as the “Five-Color Tea” for its vibrant, multicolored leaves, Da Tian Mei Ren brews into a bright amber liquor with a smooth, mellow, and sweet taste that can be enjoyed across multiple infusions.

Over the decades, it has earned recognition both for its quality and its ecological cultivation, establishing Datian as one of China’s most celebrated high-mountain tea regions and securing its place among the country’s iconic oolongs.
