Stem-heavy Hojicha is an excellent everyday tea, used to accompany meals, the commute to work, and a good read; for those reducing their caffeine intake or seeking a gateway tea from coffee; and as a base for a thirst-quenching cold brew. This one can certainly do all that, but we suggest you give it a deeper taste as well. Produced in Uji, where it would be called Karagane Hojicha and is made with higher grade material, under the dominant roasting, the intriguing spiciness of sandalwood and an almost buttery hint of toasty shortbread make for a relaxing and surprisingly nuanced infusion. It's the perfect tea to transport one from the iciest morning to a steaming teahouse or izakaya, old wood exuding the memories of many tea bowls past.
