Tea Lotus

Cha He, literally tea lotus in Chinese, is a dish to display tea leaves before steeping. Resembling a lotus petal, it serves as a vessel to weigh the leaves, after which they can be examined and their fragrance taken in. Participants of a gongfu cha session may wish to pass it around to fully appreciate the aromas and visuals of the dried leaves, which can sometimes be quite impressive. After this, the narrow end easily funnels the leaves into the waiting gaiwan or teapot, even those with a small opening.
