ashfall-gaiwan
Ashfall Gaiwan

One of the beauties of Chinese tea lies in the small element of uncertainty that keeps curiosity alive. What weather will accompany the picking season? How will a tea evolve over years of aging? Every question opens the door to countless possibilities, creating an endless multiverse of experiences.

Wood-fired ceramics bring this same sense of wonder into the world of teaware. Crafted in traditional wood kilns, where flame, ash, and minerals interact with the porcelain throughout the firing process, each piece develops unique surface effects: subtle ash glazing, natural color transitions, and organic textures that cannot be reproduced by modern electric or gas kilns.

Ren Pengfei’s work adds a further layer of individuality. A renowned specialist in wood-fired teaware, he shapes each piece entirely by hand with remarkable precision. While his mastery ensures harmony of form and function, no two pieces are ever exactly alike, each bearing the subtle variations of the artist’s hand before the kiln leaves its own unique mark.

Each piece is available only once. We have photographed every individual item, and customers can choose the exact piece they want by selecting the corresponding number shown in the product photos.

If you prefer brewing with a teapot, be sure to explore the Ashfall Teapot from the same artist.

Written by Simone

About the artist

Ren Pengfei was born in Shandong in 1985 and graduated from Jingdezhen Ceramic University in 2009.
