Artisanal Pitcher

Striking in its form, these pitchers appear at first more like works of nature than of human hand—a curl of birch bark, a pitted stone, or a sun-bleached shell. Yet a subtle ingenuity and joy in their creation soon reveals itself: a twist of clay serves as a ledge for a finger in lieu of a handle; a shallow pinch, for the thumb to rest.

Each of the few pieces has been handmade by Liu Shisan and is unique in form—they may differ significantly from the pictured piece, but are equally inspired. The artist is also responsible for the Artisanal Gaiwan and Artisanal Cup, and all three together will make an impressive set.

HOW WERE GAIWAN, PITCHER, AND CUP MADE?

During one of our tea journeys, in the 'Porcelain Capital' of Jingdezhen, we discovered Liu Shisan, a young and emerging ceramicist, and admired the rough, expressive style of his work. The Artisanal Gaiwan, Pitcher, and Cup were all commissioned by Nannuoshan, and we additionally asked the artist to film himself while custom-making our teaware:

  • ARTIST:  Liu Shisan
  • MATERIAL:  Stoneware
  • CAPACITY:  230 - 280 ml (to the rim)
  • HEIGHT:  ca. ~10 cm
  • WIDTH:  ~10 cm
