Of a modern profile, saucerless, deep-bellied, and with a wide button, this moderate-sized gaiwan varies the typical bleached white color with a soft ecru. The subtle patterning remains below the glazed surface, which is lusciously smooth, excepting the exposed edges of the fine rims and foot. The smoothness and larger button provide a comfortable control in the hand, and the tone, a good complement to the greens, golds, reds, and inky browns of tea infusions. Perhaps its best feature, however, is invisible: the workmanship is incredibly precise, with little detectable variation in its symmetry.
