Foshou Teapot Black

The raw, pitted surface of this pear-shaped teapot, traces of wheel-turning still showing, glimpses of metallic sheen alternating with a matte lustre, invites touch and tea into its pores. The lid has been notably embellished with a golden loop in the shape of a Buddha's hand citron (foshou), which lends this series its name. Though the exterior is open, most of the interior has been glazed, allowing some flexibility in its use with multiple types of tea, though the taller lid may recommend those that can benefit from a little headspace. In addition, a built-in ball filter precludes clogging, and the pour from the tapering spout is smooth and even. It's a unique style that complements the serious, earthen color of its material with a charming decorative motif.

About the artist

We encountered Zhang Xue through her work, a pair of gaiwans that left an impression while visiting Jingdezhen, and through a mutual contact have finally been able to obtain some of the very same pieces for our shop. Zhang Xue opened her own studio in Jingdezhen in 2011, soon after having completed her studies, and has since exhibited her work in Yunnan, Hangzhou, Jingdezhen, and Shanghai. The Foshou teaware is part of a series with emblems representing the ingredients of the Qianlong Emperor's favorite tisane, which he immortalized in poetry: Buddha's hand citrus, pignoli, and plum blossom, made with boiled water from fresh snow.
