White Ash Teapot

Sometimes, a tea demands a more earthy aesthetic than glossy porcelain, or even precisely formed Yixing ore: enter the White Ash Teapot. Ruddy, pitted clay glazed pale and foamy, this teapot eschews the immaculate in favor of the rough—but don't let that fool you. The tight-fitting lid, clean lines, and fine-edged spout all speak to care in its construction, a kind of sprezzatura also found in its gurgling but straight pour. The interior is glazed, albeit porously, leaving only the rims above and below exposing the material beneath; with care, therefore, it may serve multiple kinds of tea without too much crossing of flavor. Its simple geometry of circles, cylinders, and straight lines draws attention to its materiality, encouraging reflection and appreciation of the liquid material therein.
